For Sale: 2010 Spirit (Birel) SP32 Stock Moto Package w/ spares and trailer

I am selling my stock moto shifter kart package. This is is a ready to race complete package. The chassis is a 2010 Spirit SP32 32mm shifter chassis. The chassis was designed by multi-time karting World Champion Gianluca Beggio and made by Birel. It is very similar in construction to the Birel 32mm chassis, likes to be tuned the same way, and uses the same Freeline components (therefore all parts can be purchased from a Birel dealer). I purchased the kart from 3G Kart Racing in Katy, TX (a Birel dealer and race team) after it was raced only once in the WSK series. I raced it for one full regional season in 2011 and a few local races in 2012. It was has never been crashed. The kart is currently fitted with a Birel pedal extender for taller drivers. It has a plastic full length rear bumper.

The engine is a Honda CR125 built to SKUSA legal stock moto specs by SRS Engines. It uses SRS' Hybrid Float twin pump fuel system with a PMW carb so it is a potent package. For exhaust, the kart has a RLV R4 pipe with a adjustable M4 Silencer. It is cooled by a large radiator that was custom sourced by 3G Kart Racing (cost ~425 new). I used honeycomb to cover it so it is in good condition.

The kart comes with a Mychron 4 w/ GPS and data key. The kart is wired to log EGT, RPM, and water temp.

Kart stand included with kart.

Trailer
My trailer is a 2008 Haulmark 6x12 Box trailer. The tires have low mileage and it has bolted in mounting points to tie down my kart on it's kart stand.

Spares & Tools

Chassis: Extra set of Douglas Mag wheels, 5 total axles (Freeline B, D2.0, D2.5 (on kart), F, and P), Z-Racing kart cover, 4 spare tierods (from other chassis, used for hardware spares), spare shifter linkage, two spare throttle cables, 2 spare clutch cables, extra radiator mounts, box of assorted seat struts and chassis brackets, 1998-1999 Honda CR125R Service Manual, 1992-1997 Honda CR125R Service Manual, 2 spare pedals (from a different chassis), many extra front and rear brake pad shims, many new and used brake rebuilt kit parts (caliper and MC), different length brake rod, extra fuel cap, extra hardware for wheel bead stops, two 5lb lead weights

Tools: Birel front spindle wrench, tire bead breaker, chain breaker, piston stop, fuel jug

Spares & Tools Package

I am asking $7,500 for the full package. I would prefer to sell it as a full package with the trailer. I will consider selling the kart and/or trailer separately. I will not sell individual parts until the kart is sold. Please email at < dogburn at gmail dot com> with questions. Thanks for the interest.

Yaw Moment Racing 2013 Schedule

This year, my Dad and I are competing once again in E Street Prepared with the National SCCA Solo Series. I will be competing for the SCCA ProSolo National Championship with the following events:

APR 13-14: SCCA Mineral Wells ProSolo in Mineral Wells, TX

MAY 24-25: SCCA SpringNationals ProSolo in Lincoln, NE

AUG 31 - SEP 1: SCCA ProSolo Finale in Lincoln, NE

The ProSolo points championship takes points from three events, so I am cutting it close by only running three events. It's all my schedule will allow so I will have to make them count.

The SCCA Solo Nationals are once again in Lincoln, NE after Labor Day (September 2nd - 6th) where we will be competing for the ESP National Championship. The SpringNationals Championship Tour over Memorial Day should be a good warm-up for the big dance. We kick the National Solo season off with the Texas Championship Tour in College Station, TX later this month. We will also be trying a new style event this year with the Match Tour (think Evo shootout from previous years) event in Mineral Wells, TX. The bracket shootout on Sunday of the Match Tour should be an exciting change from the average event....if you do well I guess! I will also be competing for a local club points championship with the Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club. I am running in the PAX based X(Pro) class against a few other National Champions so the competition should be tough.

My karting schedule for the year is TBD. The West Texas Karting Association's schedule is up in the air at this point, but I plan to run 5-6 local races this year. I need to get back in the shifter! It's been too long.

June 23rd WTKA Club Race # 4 Report

First off, this is a first for Yaw Moment Racing....I am typing this race report from 30,000ft aboard a Delta flight to Virginia for a UVa buddy's wedding. Back to the racing - Joe, Stuart, and I raced our 125cc Shifter Karts with the West Texas Karting Association on June 23rd at Rimrock Raceway. It was blazing hot in Midland, TX last Saturday but our faithful crew member/pit bunny Ali made the trek with us. Given the 100deg temperature at 5pm when we arrived at the track, I decided to run one quick practice session on old tires as a shakedown. I was able to click off some consecutive 34.9s lap times which I was happy with given how worn my tires were (race tires from the SWRC last year).

At 8pm, the heat races (grid decided by pill pick) began and I raced on my MG Yellow tires from the May WTKA race that I won. Joe and Stuart ran a test day before this race while I was in Lincoln racing the Camaro and thrashed their May race tires so they bolted up some fresh sneakers. This would prove to be an advantage later in the evening. I drew Pole position for Heat 1 in our field of 5 shifter karts. After losing the lead after bogging at the start, I was able to slot back into P1 on Lap 1. Soon after, Stuart began to breathe down my neck on Lap 2. He gave me a little "love-tap" coming into the final hairpin which loosened me up and allowed him to sneak up beside me and take the lead into Turn 1. He checked out and went on the victory while I finished in a P3 after being passed by Joe on the final lap.

For Heat 2, I started in the 3rd position and was able to grab 2nd from Stuart at the start. I stayed there until the finish. My P2 and P3 finished put me in the P3 for the feature. The 12-lap feature was a fairly straightforward lead-follow race. Stuart started in P2 and we had a bit of a scrap on Lap 1 as I tried to pass him in several corners. I was not able to complete the pass and lost momentum which allowed him to build up a gap that he would not relinquish. Joe cruised to a comfortable victory with Stuart in P2 and me in the final podium spot.

I won't be able to race my shifter kart at Rimrock again until their September night race due to travel and SCCA racing conflicts. Hopefully, the San Angelo shifter kart racers can rack up some more victories later this year!

April 6th Shifter Kart Test at Rimrock Raceway

I'm a little tardy on this post but wanted to give a recap of my first karting day of 2012. Joe, Stuart and I went to Midland back on April 6th for a practice day in our shifter karts. It was our first time driving the karts since the final SWRC race of 2011 last October. In summary, it was a very productive day. I started the day on heavily worn tires from the SWRC finale but made some rear stiffness changes to improve the balance which allowed me to lower my personal best at Rimrock to a 34.5sec (0.3sec improvement). First, I made switched to a stiffer axle, then I narrowed the rear track, and finally I added a rear torsion bar in the full soft position to improve rear grip and overall side bite. Until this, I was chasing a loose kart and knew there was time to be gained with improved balance.

After a few sessions, we decided to have a time attack lap time battle. We each got three flying laps around the regular long course and 6 laps around the short course (see video below). I switched so a less worn set of MG yellows which has significantly more grip than the previous set I was running. With the newer tires, I dropped my personal best down to a 34.05sec lap so in total I improved 0.7s from my previous personal best. I was the fastest of the group around the long track, but Joe clipped me by 0.07sec around the long course so we split the win. There is no official record, but I have heard through the grapevine that the track record at Rimrock Raceway is in the 33s. Running the elusive 33sec lap is our goal and Joe, Stuart, and I will be racing hard to see who can be the first to the 33s!

Here is some onboard video from our lap time battle:

On the karting side, I learned a lot and had fun racing my shifter kart in the Southwest Regional Cup but travelling for 5 regional kart races was tough on my vacation from work and my wallet. I decided to get back to basics (cheap, easy fun) with karting this year and run local events with the West Texas Karting Association in Midland, TX. My focus for 2012 is the National SCCA events in the Camaro, but I do not want to give up wheel-to-wheel racing so running only local club races in the kart allows me to do both. Stuart, Joe, and I can travel up to Midland and back to San Angelo in one day which makes the racing travel much easier. I am looking forward to my 5 WTKA race events during the Summer/Fall.

Last eKartingNews.com Stock Moto Driver Rankings

eKartingNews.com released their latest Stock Moto Driver Rankings for 2012. Their National ranking system only evaluates Regional and National races so I am relying on points from my 2011 SWRC races. Race points are eligible in the ranking for one calendar year, but my last few races were good enough to keep me in the Top 40 in National Points. I'm currently ranked in the 38th position.

Shifter Kart Donuts in the Shop and testing planned for the weekend

Joe, Stuart, and I were in the shop last night prepping our karts for testing this weekend at Rimrock Raceway in Midland, TX. After getting them fired after a long off-season, we decided to make sure everything was working properly with some good old fashioned donuts.

We are running up to Rimrock Raceway on Friday for a full test day and some practice races. Rimrock will be our home track for the weekend and we'll start running races there starting in June. Joe and I both have our GoPro HD cameras so we should have some onboard action from the testing. It will be good to get back to the kart track!

Updated 2012 Racing Calendar

Here is my updated 2012 Racing Calendar

You can also view it in the calendar tab above. Basically, I only have SCCA Solo events scheduled for the ESP Camaro. We are trying to run three National Tour events in addition to the Solo National Championships in September and a full season of local autocrossing with Equipe Rapide Sports Car Club . Clearly, the focus for this year is developing and racing the Camaro. Unfortunately, I had several conflicts that are forcing me to choose between several large evens throughout the year. The SCCA Texas ProSolo event in Mineral Wells, TX is one of two National SCCA autocrosses in Texas this year, but it is the same weekend as my wedding - not much compromise here! Also this weekend, the SCCA Texas National Tour conflicts with the Lone Star Grand Prix - epic karting street race being run on part of the 1984 Dallas Grand Prix Formula 1 street course.

However, 2012 is still shaping up to be an exciting in and out of racing. I am looking forward to continue competing Nationally with the SCCA and hoping to get back in the shifter kart soon. Stay tuned for race results and onboard video as the season progresses!

2011 Racing Season in Review

To start off, here is a highlight clip reel from the season...

2011 was an interesting year....it started off with plans of selling all of my karting gear to go Spec Miata road racing, then I decided my plan was to stick with shifter kart racing for a while longer while also trying to compete in the Skip Barber and Bondurant driver shootouts in addition to some open-wheel road races. Well, the Skip Barber Shootout changed their rules which basically made me ineligible this year and the Bondurant shootout was a one-and-done, so that left kart racing in the SWRC and local events.
I decided to kick it up a notch with some last minute plans to attend the 2011 SCCA Solo Nationals in Lincoln, NE. Thanks to Lane, some help from my Dad, and late nights in Lane's garage, the Solo Nationals went from maybe to definitely, and that's when 2011 went from good to awesome. I finished 2011 undefeated in Solo events (3 for 3 incl. Solo Nats) with 2 feature race karting victories and 4th place in Stock Moto Senior points in the Southwest Regional Cup.

Season Summary:
  • Proposed to my now-fiance Ali (not racing, but still important I'd say)
  • SCCA Solo National Championship in A-Stock Class
  • 100% win ratio in Solo events
  • 2 Pro Class wins and Overall Top PAX wins with Equipe Rapide Autocross Club
  • 2 Feature Race victories in Stock Moto Senior with North Texas Karters
  • 4th place in Stock Moto Senior points in Southwest Regional Cup
  • Completed first full season of Regional-level karting
  • Raced at 3 new kart tracks (GCKI, OMC, DKC)
  • Completed a 3-day Bondurant Advanced Road Racing School
  • Drove a 305 Sprint Car for the first time (thanks Gary!)
However, one of the things that made the 2011 racing season the most enjoyable was getting to do it with friends and family. My fiance Ali was quite the trooper and attended almost all of my races this year including co-piloting with me on trips to Oklahoma and Houston. I started autocrossing with Lane and got to continue racing with my Dad. Joe and Stuart bought shifter karts so now we have our very own karting team in San Angelo. This was a big step up from being the lone West Texas karter in 2010 and I look forward to keeping it going in 2012.

Porsches and Rental Karts in San Antonio

This past Saturday, Yama and I made a quick day trip to San Antonio to pick his car up from Porsche of San Antonio. They have a fantastic new facility off of 1-10 and had a quite a collection of fine Porsches including a GT2 RS, GT3 RS, several GT3s, several hardtop and droptop 911 Turbos, and also had some new 991 911s.

Here are some photos of the GTRS:

After grabbing some Japanese food for lunch, Yama and I hit up Alamo Karts on our way back to San Angelo which is an outdoor rental karting facility that uses unique propane powered karts. This also the home of Alamo Powersports and Alamo Sportscars . Clearly, the owners of this business are my kind of people - they were motorcycles, racecars, street kit cars, shifter karts, and their own go-kart track. Here are some pictures of their facility:

Final 2011 EKN Stock Moto Driver Ranking

I dropped back a few spots since the last ranking was published, but will finish the season 40th overall. There are 6 Texas shifter kart pilots ranked in the top 25 (incl. #5 and #9) and several more highly ranked drivers who raced in the Southwest Regional Cup. I still have lots to improve on for next season, but it definitely helps to have great competition in TX to motivate me to get faster. Given that 2011 was my first full season of regional-level karting and with the driving talent in TX, I'm pleased to finished the season in the top 40.

Here is a link to the EKN driver rankings and the season wrap-up article.

Texas Lone Star Grand Prix on Jalopnik

The Texas Lone Star Grand Prix was featured on Jalopnik.com today with TX shifter kart racer Michael Ryan Johnson shown doing donuts at the TX Fairgrounds. Pretty entertaining video and great to see karting make it onto a popular site like Jalopnik.

Day 1 of the Bondurant Adv. Road Racing School

I made it through Day 1 of the Bondurant 3-Day Advanced Road Racing class today with no incidents and lots of quality seat time. Our instructors for the 6-person class were Pete Miller and Austin Robison. Both were great instructors who gave proper in-car feedback and were pretty handy behind the wheel as well. Today, we ran the newly-liveried Corvette C6 Grand Sport Corvettes around the Bondurant School course. The Bondo 'Vettes held up really well to the abuse and were a blast to drive. They have enough power to be a good throttle-maintenance training tool and the Goodyear rubber provided enough grip and good balance. Also, the brake package was very durable and we didn't have any brake fade issues all day despite the 90 degree ambient temperatures.

We got lucky as we will be running 3 different tracks during the class. Tomorrow, we head to the Firebird West Course and we get to rip up the Firebird East track on Wednesday. This should really help with course recognition and to help us learn how to get pace on new tracks quickly. Can't wait for tomorrow!

I took some video from the on-track driving with my GoPro HD camera so I post that later when I have a chance to edit. After the school, we hit up Octane Raceway for some indoor karting shenanigans from which I also have some good HD video of our "no bumping" and "rule following."

Our Bondo Classroom during the Lunch Break...nice man cave!
